Overview

Course description

MEWP Combo is a 1-day course for operators of mobile elevating work platforms, boom lifts and scissor lifts. You learn the standards and OHS requirements that apply, the terrain types, the parts of a machine, and what the operator’s manual, data plate and decals tell you. You learn what affects stability and how to operate safely, including fall protection, controls, emergency planning and troubleshooting. You inspect the work area and the machine, check its functions, and complete a practical evaluation. Certification takes a theory test and a practical.

Hands-on

Practical activities

Workplace inspection

Inspect the work area with a hazard checklist: drop-offs, floor obstructions, sloped or slippery surfaces, overhead obstructions and power lines, weather, unauthorized personnel and vehicle traffic.

Pre-use inspection

Inspect the machine before use on the check sheet for a boom lift or a scissor lift: manual, decals, wiring, leaks, fluid levels, tires, battery, guardrail and stabilizers.

Pre-use function checks

Test the ground controls and the platform controls on the same check sheet, including the emergency stop and the auxiliary lowering.

MEWP operator competency evaluation

A practical evaluation of start-up, travel, elevating, lowering and shutdown skills. The evaluator marks each skill safe, unsafe or not applicable.

Certification

Valid for 3 Years

The 3-year expiry is not a regulatory requirement (no matter what anyone else tells you). This is an industry best practice.
