Hands-on

Practical activities

Workplace inspection

A self-audit of the forklift environment: walkways, the operator’s view and backing up safety.

Pre-use inspection

Visual checks of the forklift on the operator’s daily checklist: operator’s manual, damage, leaks, tires and wheels, forks, chains, cables and hoses, battery, guards, mechanical safety devices, and the operator compartment and controls.

Pre-use function checks

The operational checks on the same checklist: power up, power disconnect, electrical safety devices, steering, brakes and travel controls, parking brake, hydraulic controls, attachments, limit switches and battery charge.

Operator competency evaluation

A practical evaluation of 31 competencies in four categories: startup, travel, load engagement and disengagement, and shutdown. The evaluator marks each safe, unsafe or not applicable.

Load capacity calculation

Work out the lifting capacity when the load centre is larger than the rated load centre, then decide whether the forklift can safely lift the load.
