I finally believe that I'm good at what I do

Instructor developmentFall protection

I'm really good at what I do. There, I can finally say it. The other week, two different instructor candidates told me so. One came back after taking a course from me a few months ago. Another trained with us at Haland Learning three years ago and said our program somehow got better — and she was adamant I really understood how good it was.

It hit differently than it usually does. The rules I beat into myself was:

  1. Work your ass off
  2. Feel like you suck at all times
  3. Never say you’re good at something
  4. Keep going.

Now, I'm dropping rule 2 and 3 :) Only in the last year or two have I actually started to believe that I'm good at what I do. I’m not particularly magical, but what I AM is relentless. Our Fall Protection course is 8 hours long. Standard instructional design ratio says 64 hours to build. I’ve put almost 640 hours (as of April 19) to get to v4.1.

That’s the standard I’ve held myself to since the beginning. Here's some of the courses I've built and trained instructors on: For BC Construction Safety Alliance:

  1. Internal Auditor (and trained all their instructors)
  2. External Auditor (and trained all their external auditors)
  3. Traffic Control Person(and trained all their TCP instructors).

At Haland Learning:

  1. Fall Protection (NCSO recognized)
  2. Confined Space (NCSO recognized)
  3. MEWP Operator (meets CSA standard)
  4. Counterbalance forklift
  5. Telehandler Forklift
  6. Skid Steer
  7. Safer Supervision (meets COR for every Certifying Partner in BC)
  8. Safety Committee (WorkSafe BC compliant)

Plus instructor training for every single one. We've trained over 150 instructors since 2019. The work ethic and work quality was always there. The belief is new. If you’re really good at what you do — and you probably are — I hope you don’t wait as long as I did to say it.
